EVESHAM SAILING CLUB

Sailing on the Avon river presents a unique experience to the Evesham sailors. They have to contend with varying amounts of current depending on the rainfall, pit their wits against the ever changeable wind, and negotiate around the many pleasure craft cruising the river. Nevertheless, these challenges are met with gusto and enjoyed by the sailors young and old alike.

The present members enjoy sailing in a fleet of dinghies varying from the popular Mirror, Comet, Enterprise, Lark, Lightning, Solo, and British Moth. These boats are mostly owned by the members themselves, although the club also possesses three club boats for use by members who do not yet have their own craft.

Competitions are held twice weekly throughout the season and there are friendly contests with other sailing clubs in the area.

Why not come down and see what it is all about? The club promotes sailing to all ages, and also enjoys an active social side, including various trips, skittles, barbeques and other events which make for the friendly atmosphere found amongst the members.

Sunday 27th April 2008

Two closely fought handicap races filled the programme down at Common Road last Sunday. In the first, Roger Middleton and John Pickford found themselves in front of the rest of the fleet before the wind filling in from behind them brought the whole fleet together leaving Middleton and Pickford struggling to find room to negotiate the marks. Out of the bunched boats came Ian Edwards and Adam Styles who then began to dominate the race leaving several individual duels behind them. Simon Styles and Pickford enjoyed close company for most of the race but it was Peter Green who sailed through the fleet to take up the challenge with Edwards and Adam Styles. Team Baylis had to contend with Middleton and Stuart Bonham, but it was Edwards who held onto the lead with Green narrowly beating Adam Styles for second place

The second heat saw Adam take the lead from the start with Edwards in hot pursuit. Green fell foul of a penalty which effectively put him out of the race. Again, Simon Styles and Pickford competed closely until Styles had a tremendous lift down wind which Pickford could not match, giving Styles an advantage which he kept to the race end. Edwards could not catch Adam Styles but managed to keep close enough to win on handicap with Adam relegated to second place and Simon a close third.
